How to Become a Chartered Accountant in Pakistan

Becoming a Chartered Accountant in Pakistan is a rigorous and demanding process that requires dedication and commitment. Here are the steps to follow to attain this prestigious designation

  • Educational Qualification

To embark on the CA journey, you need to have completed at least 14 years of education. This typically involves a bachelor's degree in commerce, accounting, or a related field.

  • Entry Tests

You must pass the entry tests conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) to gain admission to their CA program.

  • Training

After clearing the entry tests, you will commence a mandatory training period. This practical training is usually conducted under the supervision of a Chartered Accountant in practice or in an approved training organization. The training typically lasts for 3-4 years.

  • Intermediate and Final Examinations

During your training period, you will need to appear for a series of examinations conducted by ICAP. These exams are categorized into Intermediate and Final levels. Successful completion of these exams is a crucial step in becoming a CA.

  • Practical Experience

Alongside your training, you must complete a specified period of practical experience to gain exposure to real-world accounting and financial practices.

  • Module D Training

A crucial component of CA education is the Module D training, which focuses on soft skills, ethics, and professional development.

  • Final Assessment

CA Eligibility Criteria in Pakistan

Currently, ICAP offers 2 types of Entry Routes and Eligibility Criteria differ for both.

Full-Time Scheme Eligibility Criteria

  • Graduates from Pakistani or Foreign Universities

Individuals who have graduated from a recognized local or foreign university, as approved by the relevant higher education authority in Pakistan, with a 16-year educational background are eligible for Chartered Accountancy (CA) registration.

  • 14-Year Education Graduates

Aspiring CAs with a 14-year educational background and a minimum aggregate score of 45% or equivalent grades are eligible for registration. They should have also successfully completed the Pre-requisite Competencies (PRC) under Directive 1.20 or obtained an exemption as per Directive 1.21.

  • Qualifying Assessment Test (QAT) Completers

Those who have met the eligibility criteria by passing the Qualifying Assessment Test (QAT) and have successfully fulfilled the Pre-requisite Competencies (PRC) requirements under Directive 1.20, or those who have been exempted as per Directive 1.21, are eligible for CA registration.

  • Professional Accountancy Body Graduates

Registration is also open to individuals who have passed examinations from professional accountancy bodies approved by the Council, as specified in Directive 1.21 for this purpose.

Trainee Scheme Eligibility Criteria

  • Completion of CAF Stage or Equivalents

Eligibility includes individuals who have successfully completed the CAF (Certificate in Accounting and Finance) stage or equivalent examinations offered by the Institute, along with the fulfillment of applicable Hands-on Courses.

  • 16-Year Bachelor's Graduates

Aspiring candidates should hold a bachelor's degree with a 16-year educational background from a local or foreign university recognized by the competent higher education authority in Pakistan.

  • 14-Year Bachelor's Graduates with 45% Marks

Eligibility extends to graduates holding a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 14 years of education, achieving an aggregate of at least 45% marks or equivalent grades from a local or foreign university recognized by the competent higher education authority in Pakistan.

They should also have successfully passed the Pre-requisite Competencies (PRC) as per Directive 1.20 or obtained an exemption under Directive 1.21.
